The Originals universe takes place in mostly normal Earth, season 2 taking place during 2013. Every major event progressed normally, and technology is the same as it would be for general Earth of 2013. The differences, instead, are found in the underside of society. Supernatural creatures of all kinds exist in this world, and the French Quarter houses some of the most extraordinary of them all.

New Orleans has always had a long history of supernatural creatures gathering en masse. One of these such creatures was the Original family of vampires. When the colony was first being settled, the Original vampires came to New Orleans to stake their claim in the budding society. The Original family can trace their origins back to the Vikings Era. The Mikaelsons were vampires that had settled the New World, but when the youngest child was killed by a pack of nearby werewolves their mother- the most powerful witch of all time- turned her children into the first vampires in history. Throughout time, they sired more vampires and traveled the world. Eventually the family came to New Orleans where they lived for centuries. They were integral in building New Orleans in it's formative years, and had their hands in major politics in the cities. After a time, however, their past caught up with them. Ultimately they were chased from their long-held home, only to return in the new millenium. Now they reside within the French Quarter of the city, trying to rebuild the power they once held.

Living for so long in one city peacefully without discovery was nearly impossible. To do so, the Original family made a deal with humans and other beings that enabled everyone to leave in a somewhat dubious peace. The humans formed what was referred to as the Faction in reaction to the supernatural presence in the city, with the aid of Klaus Mikaelson. This Faction helped to protect the human interests in the city to the result of vampires being allowed to feed on tourists and other outsiders, but not locals. This satisfied the Mikaelson's desires and allowed them to live nearly peacefully with the humans. The Faction typically made other arrangements with other species in the city to everyone's mutual benefit, and survived for hundreds of years. In recent times, however, the Faction has fallen apart and instead is more of a meeting of people from each group meeting together to work as a whole. Humans are still represented in these meetings.

Witches are one of the supernatural beings already living in New Orleans for as long as the city has existed. Witches are normal humans in form and physical weaknesses, but they possess the ability to harness magic and wield it. Witches have the abilities to bring the dead back to life, break down barriers, and dessicate vampires. They can channel each other to become stronger, or even channel their dead. The witches of the French Quarter practice ancestral magic. This means that their dead have been consecrated on French Quarter soil for as long as they've lived there. This keeps their ancestors tethered to the land, living together on the Other Side and feeding their magic back to their descendants. In order to use this magic, however, the descendants have to stay within the land that their ancestors were consecrated on. This means that to keep practicing their magic, the witches are not able to leave the French Quarter. These are not the only witches living in New Orleans, just the ones that are most relevant to the Mikaelsons. At the start of the series, the witches are oppressed by a vampire who rules the French Quarter named Marcel, unable to do magic without his permission or else face punishment for doing so. Other witches live in other parts of New Orleans ( such as in Algiers across the river ) practicing various other types of magic.

Werewolves are another of the supernatural beings in the city of New Orleans, however they do not reside in the French Quarter at the start of the series. Instead, they live in the bayoux where they were banished long ago. Werewolves regard themselves as ‘cursed’ with the gene for lycanthropy. The werewolf gene lies dormant in wolves, and is only triggered when the carrier kills someone. This murder can be intentional or accidental, but both end in the werewolf curse taking effect. Werewolves are strong and fast, only bested by vampires and only barely so. Like vampires, however, their emotions seem to be more heightened than a normal human being’s and they tend towards more aggressive behaviors. They are slaves to the full moon, and every full moon they undergo a painful transformation that breaks every bone in their body to turn them into a wolf forcefully. Werewolves are able to change at any other point by choice, but are unable to resist the full moon. They are not allergic to silver, but wolfsbane does hurt them greatly. They can be killed the same ways a human might be, though. Despite their weaknesses, werewolves carry venom in their teeth that is lethal to a vampire. Even a scrape from the teeth of a werewolf can kill a vampire in a long, drawn out, and excruciating manner. In New Orleans, the Crescent werewolf pack once ruled the city. They were powerful and many inhabited the French Quarter. The wolves of this pack warred with each other, killing royals of the bloodline until things began to spiral out of control. In order to control the city, Marcel cursed all remaining wolves with the aid of a witch. The curse reversed the werewolf one, where the werewolves would remain as wolves at all times and only be allowed to be human during the full moon. Hayley was a part of this pack, but was a baby when it happened. Marcel had a policy against harming children, and instead had Hayley taken from the city to be raised away from the French Quarter.

While these supernatural beings were all living in New Orleans at the start of the show, it was the vampires that really held control over the French Quarter.

Vampires were the first to make themselves prominent in New Orleans centuries ago, and remain the most common supernatural creatures in the town. While not the first immortals of the world, they were the first vampires created from a spell to grant immortality to the Original family ( Niklaus, Rebekah, Kol, Finn, and Elijah ) used by their mother. All vampires can trace their lineage back to the Originals, and the death of an Original will end the lives of all vampires who can be traced back to that Original. Vampires are naturally strong, fast, and have keen senses. However, for every strength a vampire was given from the spell, a weakness was created to counter it. They're not allergic to garlic or religious artifacts of any sort, but do burn in the sun and are weak to vervain and magic and sunlight. Nature’s way of balancing the unnatural immortality vampires were given ( strengths and weaknesses are further expanded on in powers section of the app ). The process of creating a vampire involves feeding someone the blood of a vampire, that someone dying while vampire blood is in their system, and then that someone drinking the blood of a human after coming back to life as a vampire. Those who have been turned but have not yet drank the blood of a human are referred to as being ‘in transition,’ and if a vampire does not drink blood while in transition they will die after twenty-four hours.

Marcel was the king of the vampires for a time. He fought back the werewolf presence in the city, brought the witches to heel under his command, and empowered vampires to live freely within the French Quarter by making deals with humans. He held his rule for decades, until the Originals finally returned. Klaus and Marcel fought for control of the vampires, but ultimately Klaus always gets what he wants. Once Klaus gained control of the vampires, Marcel's careful hold on the city started to unravel as more and more problems arose that the vampires could no longer keep control of.

Hybrids are rare and only two exist in the city, though at the start of the series Klaus was the only. Klaus was born with the werewolf gene that was suppressed by his mother after it was triggered from his first kill as a vampire. To suppress the werewolf gene, his mother used very specific items and the blood of a doppelganger- a Petrova born every 500 years with the same exact blood as their original from centuries before- to bind it. Nearly 1000 years later, Klaus performed the ritual that enabled him to release his werewolf side and effectively became the first vampire/werewolf hybrid. With the blood of the doppelganger, Klaus is able to create more hybrids by turning werewolves to vampires. If a hybrid does not drink the blood of the doppelganger while in transition, they will die. Human blood does not allow the transition to be complete, another side effect of the binding spell. Hybrids tend to have a sire bond with their sire ( who has thus far been Klaus ). The sire bond stems from intense feelings of gratitude from the hybrids to their sires. Being a hybrid means that werewolves are no longer slaves to the full moon. They gain the ability to turn at will, which ceases the painful transformations forced on them every full moon. The end of their suffering leaves them grateful to their sire that in turn creates the sire bond. A sire bond makes the hybrid want to do anything to please their sire, even at the cost of their life or the lives of those they love. A sire bond can be broken by ending the feelings that create the bond in the first place. For hybrids, this is done by making themselves unafraid of their transformation so that there is no need to be grateful.

After the doppelgangers in Mystic Falls were all made vampires, Klaus lost his ability to make more hybrids. Their vampiric blood destroyed their doppelganger qualities, and any hybrid made without doppelganger blood would die. After all other hybrids Klaus once sired were killed in the Vampire Diaries, Klaus was the last remaining one. A trait, however, that a hybrid has is the ability to have children. Klaus and Hayley end up having a children, and it is revealed that this baby's blood is able to both make and sustain hybrids. In this way, Hayley and the child shared blood before it's birth. Shortly after the baby, Hope, was born, Hayley died with Hope's blood still mixed with hers. This brought Hayley back as a hybrid, and pricking her daughter's finger allowed her to live on still.

All of these beings live in New Orleans, and many have reasons to hate each other. The Original family has a long and bloody history that many cannot forgive, making their enemies numbers nearly uncountable. The witches want their freedom, the wolves want to return to the city, the humans want safety, and everyone wants their piece of New Orleans.

At Hayley's canonpoint Klaus has long since established himself as the new ruling vampire ( hybrid technically ) of New Orleans. For a time, it seemed peace had been established between the different beings. However, grudges run deep and ancient enemies created strife and the witches and wolves never forgot. The curse on the werewolves was reversed, though, and the witches freed from tyranny.

Hayley has had her child, only to realize that as a Mikaelson she will never find peace or safety. For a time, Klaus and Hayley tried to send their child away to protect her from harm. They let the city believe the child dead and them grieving before cleaning up the shambles of a war that had followed the child's birth. Yet Klaus' own mother returned, attempting to restore all her children to human bodies so they may find peace and live and die as they were meant to. During the course of trying to stop the woman who had once threatened Hope, Hayley and Klaus discovered a greater threat to their child. Esther had been unable to bear children long ago, and asked her older sister for help from the dark magics when Esther had stopped practicing. Her sister, Dahlia, had agreed but at the price of every first born Mikaelson child belonging to her. Esther had paid that price, but Dahlia had only ever claimed one child as the other Mikaelsons had been unable to have children in the past. Until Klaus had his first child.

Now Dahlia is coming for the child, willing to destroy anyone who tries to stop her. Hayley and Klaus use their connections throughout New Orleans to search for help. Marcel helps to rebuild their vampire army, Elijah makes peace with the witches for protection, and Hayley finds her family in the wolves. With the discovery of her own status as alpha, Hayley learns that by marrying and uniting with another alpha from the Crescent wolf pack, Jackson, she can pass along her strengths to everyone in her pack. The two agree to marry, and all who witness the unification gain Hayley's control over their wolf side from partial transformations to only turning when they desire to. This allows Hayley to create an army of strong werewolves to protect her child with, and thus enables her to bring Hope back home to the French Quarter. The wolves move into the French Quarter once again to protect their alpha and her child, and slowly Klaus and Hayley prepare for the evil that is coming for their baby.

PERSONALITY:
Wolves are creatures that are meant to have a pack. Somewhere they belong. For Hayley, this has never been true.

Hayley was raised by people who weren't her parents, adopted as a baby. This had never been a problem until the wolf gene in Hayley was triggered through a boating accident that Hayley regards as stupidity ultimately. The next full moon revealed Hayley's true nature, and the nature of her adoptive parents. After destroying her living room during her first change, Hayley was forced out of her home. With nowhere to go, Hayley found packs to join with but none ever felt fully like home.

The problem was that Hayley always had a gap where home should have been. Where her true pack should be. This caused Hayley to chase ways of filling that gap. Typically, this was done through joining other packs. Eventually it was done by latching onto a boy who needed help learning to not be afraid of himself. Enter Tyler Lockwood, a newbie hybrid who needed to break his sire bond by learning not to fear his own change. After spending months with Tyler, helping to teach him to give into his change, Hayley formed a bond with him that she thought might satisfy her need for family.

Ultimately, Hayley never stopped looking for her true family. This became a weakness to be exploited by many, including Atticus Shane who convinced Hayley to deliver twelve unsired hybrids to him to be sacrificed. Hayley wasn't as concerned with the why's of the sacrifice, but rather with what Shane promised her. The destination of her parents. It wasn't until after she delivered the hybrids that Hayley learned her actual parents were truly dead.

Feeling lost without a compass anymore, Hayley ends up telling Klaus of plans to kill him. This results in an alliance and an unexpected friendship with the hybrid that forever changed Hayley's life.

Chasing after her parents, her family, and potentially her pack, drives Hayley to chase down every lead she can possibly gather. In the end, she winds up back in New Orleans in more trouble as she gets used in a plot to manipulate Klaus.

Her desire to find her pack is an open and obvious vulnerability that constantly gets exploited. She's tricked into being with her family so that witches may attack her while she is unprotected, she is drawn to New Orleans by the hope of finding this family and witches hold her captive to manipulate the father of her baby, and others reveal things to her when they need her most.

Despite this vulnerability, though, Hayley has learned to compensate for her weakness in other ways.

Hayley is a strong woman, something easily discerned from spending five seconds with the girl. She's bold and upfront, unafraid to lay it out there for the wold. This strength has helped Hayley in other ways, even finding strength in being a werewolf where others feared the change. And while wanting to find her family leaves her open to manipulation, Hayley is aware of this weakness and is unashamed of it. Rather, she asserts her wants and desires.

Fearless is another word that describes Hayley. Where she sees her weaknesses, she embraces them and chases after her dreams regardless of potential outcomes. She's never afraid of a fight, even when greatly outmatched. She'll take on any challenge to meet her own dreams.

These dreams heavily center around belonging most of the time. Eventually, though, Hayley finds her pack and finds her center.

This leaves Hayley needing to assert what it means to be who she is ultimately. Her life had been predefined by her desire to find a place to belong that once she's found it she has to learn what it means to be a wolf, to be part of a pack, and even to be a mother in the end.

Hayley's values slowly shift as this occurs. No longer does she have to chase the past down, but she is allowed to live in the moment for the first time in her life. This causes Hayley to have to assert her own loyalties and live up to them.

Hayley is a woman who has never been afraid to be who she is. She is proud of herself and shows the world she is. Finding her pack only helps her find what means most to her in life: family. Which means she will live and die for her family in the end. As such, even while pregnant, Hayley asserts the wolves presence in New Orleans in order to help free them from the bayoux and allow them to return to the city. She fights for what she believes in and stands before witches, humans, and vampires to show that she will not be so easily put aside.

All in all, Hayley is an honest woman who isn't shy about speaking her mind. She doesn't enjoy hiding her thoughts and feelings, though she will if it serves a purpose ( such as hiding the existence of her baby to protect her ). However, if given the opportunity to safely reveal the truth she always will. She admires honesty in return, finding it more easy to get along with those who speak their mind. This is part of why she bonds so easily with the Mikaelsons, none of them fearing the truth and always speaking so openly. Especially Elijah, the noble one who always seems to have goodness in his heart.

Fighting for her family drives Hayley to do many things she's not proud of, however. At one point, she kills wolves to help Klaus regain power and asks herself why she does this when she's a wolf herself. As such, Hayley has has to find a balance between who she really is and what she must do in order to protect her child. While the wolves mean much to her, her child will always mean more. This leaves Hayley often making hard choices for her child, though she always ends up making a choice in the end and standing by it.

As a vampire, Hayley's emotions are more amped than normal. While usually a very relaxed person, Hayley has a quick temper with regards to certain things ( typically threats to her family and loved ones ) This is a result of being a werewolf, something that tends to hype up aggression and rage. As a vampire, this trait is worsened. At times, Hayley can feel out of control of herself when she's so used to control in the past. She embraces being a vampire easily, but the lack of control does leave her conflicted and troubled. Eventually, she does find her balance again between being vampire and werewolf, but always her temper can be just at the surface ready to boil over.

Being Queen is new to Hayley. It's a title really unfitting of her. She's always been poor and unassuming. She's never dreamed of being more. But learning that her parents were wolf royalty and that she was promised to marry Jackson... it's overwhelming.

Hayley assumes her role as Queen but not out of a desire to lead. Jackson is the leader, she just empowers her people. She wants to see them at their strongest, and she also knows the advantages that gives her. Never afraid to do anything for her family, she knows that being queen gives her an army willing to fight and die for her. And her baby. However, she's never quite so comfortable as queen and ultimately has to be taught by Klaus how to assert herself over others. While she may not assume herself queen, it becomes clear that Hayley's honest disposition and strength of character make her a perfect queen of the wolves. And ultimately she does care for the wolves and want to see them at their best.

Hayley is typically a casual sort of person. She's not necessarily needy, having learned to care for herself when abandoned. She has desires like any, most centering around a desire for a pack and for a family. And like most, she will do anything for her family. She's not shy of violence, easily embracing her temper when it's useful. But she's rare to let herself lose control. She prides herself on her power as a werewolf, and a werewolf without control cannot lead or help her pack. Hayley is an honest sort of person who can be upfront to the point of being abrasive. She doesn't shy away from this, either, and accepts the way the world views her honesty. She's a strong woman willing to take control of her life and is unafraid of her weaknesses.

POWER:
HYBRID ⇢ Hayley was born as a werewolf. Werewolves are powerful in their own rights, able to change from human to wolf. However, they are only able to do so under the power of the full moon. They do have access to more enhanced senses and strength without the influence of the moon, but their wolves side are locked away from them otherwise. While in wolf form during the full moon, however, wolves tend to lack a sense of control over themselves. Some are able to control themselves, but for the most part they give themselves over to the wolf under the light of the moon. This makes being a werewolf more like a curse rather than a gift.

The daughter Hayley carried, however, has the ability to create hybrids from her blood ( assumedly from having been born of a hybrid father herself ). Hayley died only moments after giving birth to her child, yet there was still enough shared blood lingering between the two to have Hayley be revived as vampire/wolf hybrid. Being born as a vampire granted Hayley the powers of both vampires and werewolves, with the added ability of being able to control her wolf side from then on. Ever since, she's been able to turn herself at will into a wolf and even do partial transformations.

ENHANCED ABILITIES : Super strength, speed/agility, and senses. Hybrids are stronger than most other creatures physically, even without activating their wolf form. Activating their wolf form does add some slightly more strength, but not much more than already exists naturally. As hybrids, their senses are also heightened. However, they are not constantly on. They can choose to focus in on something specific to hear across greater distances, and changing their eyes to that of a wolf can help them focus their vision as well.

HEALING/DURABILITY : Hybrids are able to survive nearly any attack on them. They will heal from any injury, so long as nothing is obstructing the wound. They can even have their necks snapped and ‘die’ and still heal themselves and revive again. They tend to heal faster than normal vampires, even from wolfsbane or vervain. They are able to withstand more pain and trauma as well. They do feel it, though, and have to bear the pain no matter how much they can survive it/heal it.

CONTROL : Hybrids have heightened emotions at the time of their change. To cope with the feelings of intense guilt, sadness, depression, etc., vampires are able to ‘turn off/turn on’ their ‘humanity switch,’ as they often call it. However, hybrids seem to be able to get their grasp a little faster. It is unclear as to why, though speculation is that controlling natural wolf aggression helps with controlling all other emotions has vampires. While quick-tempered, Hayley is always able to reign it back in in the end.

DREAM MANIPULATION : All vampires have the abilities to affect the dreams of people sleeping, manipulating them the way that they want to. This can be used for better or worse, and is able to be detected if the person affected pays enough attention. Hybrids have this ability but in a weaker capacity, generally requiring physical touch to be able to do so.

COMPULSION : All vampires have the ability to compel people by looking into their eyes and making them do what they want, usually by voice command and hybrids have inherited this trait. This can be used to dictate a command or even change someone’s thinking patterns/erase memories/etc. If a compelled person is turned, though, everything they were compelled to do returns to them. So if they were compelled to forget, they will remember everything after turning. However, it is shown that a human with great control over their minds can resist compulsion.

IMMORTALITY/HEALING : Hybrids cease aging at the time of their turn. They can live forever, and won’t die of natural causes. Only outside forces can kill a hybrids. Hybrids are immune to sicknesses, as well. They are only affected by poisons generated from one of their weaknesses.

HEALING PROPERTIES : These properties are found in the blood of hybrids. Hybrid blood can heal any injury that it could heal in a hybrid. It does create the risk of the human potentially dying while vampire blood is in their system, though.

IMPERVIOUS TO SUNLIGHT : Unlike vampires, hybrids do not require a daylight ring made by a witch to be able to walk in sunlight. Their werewolf heritage allows them to walk in daylight freely.

TRANSFORMATION : Hybrids retain their ability to change into a wolf, but with added bonuses. No longer are they restricted to only changing under the light of the full moon. Nor do they have to turn under the moon. Most can lose control while in wolf form still, but they do not have to change anymore without wanting to. As an added bonus, they can perform partial transformations. They can display their wolf's teeth without changing fully into a wolf. They may also grow their claws or change their eyes or any other part they need to be changed without fully changing. They may also bear their vampire fangs and werewolf fangs at the same time, or only display one at a time. Their wolf's fangs also still carry their werewolf venom that is deadly to vampires.

Hybrids are not without weaknesses, however:

VERVAIN : The flowers were found at the base of the white oak tree that gave the Original family immortality. Touching the flower burns anyone. A human on vervain is dangerous to a hybrid. Their blood will taste of vervain and poison a hybrid. They also cannot be compelled so long as they have vervain on them or in their system.

WOLFSBANE : Much like vervain, wolfsbane is a weakness of werewolves and can still affect hybrids and weaken them the same.

PHYSICAL TRAUMA : Wounds can slow a hybrid down. While durable and able to heal quickly, they still have to have the time to heal. Thus guns, knives, etc. can be used to slow them down. Breaking a hybrid's neck can also leave them unconscious until they heal back again. Extreme physical trauma can kill a hybrid, though. Removing the head or the heart will kill a hybrid outright.

STAKES : Unlike a vampire, a wooden stake will not kill a hybrid. It can take them out temporarily, much the same way breaking their neck might. Wood is harmful to them, but ultimately it does not kill them alone.

INVITATION : Homes that are owned by a person in any way cannot be entered without invitation. This is a weakness inherited from being vampire. Once allowed in, you cannot uninvite a hybrid. Homes with only hybrids living in them and no human owner can be entered freely. Being inside a home where they are not invited is disorienting, crushing, painful, and smothering.

MAGIC : Magic can weaken a hybrid, another weakness inherited from vampires. Witches are often shown to use aneurysms to bring down a vampire, as it causes great pain while they constantly try to heal from the injury. Other magic is just as dangerous, it all depends on how the witch uses their magic.

DESSICATION : Vampires who go days without blood will dry out and desiccate. Going a week leaves them fully desiccated. Witches are also able to perform a spell that does this instantly. In the same train of though, animal blood can weaken a hybrid and leave them not at full strength.

Other worlds.... check... [ Hayley muses to herself over the device. She sounds somewhat surprised, but almost defeated. As though maybe she should have predicted something like this. With how her life is going, she maybe should have guessed. ]

So I have a question. [ Her voice picks up beat a bit, moving off the previous subject. ]

Does anyone know how the... Porter? That's the thing, right? Does anyone know exactly how it chooses who comes and who goes?

Because I want off that list. [ Her voice almost sounds sharp. Snappy. ] And I'll act any way I have to get removed.

I need to get back home. My kid... she's in danger. She needs me, and I need to be there protecting her. I'm no hero anyway, so I don't really see why I should stay. Or what I was even picked in the first place... [ Her voice trails as she mumbles. ] Not like I've ever tried to be someone's savior. Do I seem like the hero type? [She sounds more disgruntled than actually angry. ]

So yeah. If anyone could just point me the quickest way out of her, I'll take it. Thanks.

FINAL NOTES:
The powers and background section of this application were taken and altered from another application I did for another character in this universe ( Caroline - [personal profile] abyssale ). So there are similarities, but ultimately a lot of revisions to fit that Hayley's centralized story is from The Originals, where the politics of the supernatural world are a drastic change from those of The Vampire Diaries. [personal profile] abyssale is my account with my OOC information on that application on her journal as well as confirmation.

Please note that her reserve was stated as only being Hayley Marshall, but I am applying her with the name Hayley Marshall-Kenner. When I reserved I expected to take her from episode 10 of season 2, but decided instead to take her after her marriage. So her name became hyphenated to reflect that marriage.
